GSM operators promise an Internet of Things revolution with NB-IoT communications

Street lighting control is a key focus and inteliLIGHT®, as an LPWA street lighting control technology leader, already started developing the first NB-IoT compatible controller

Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT) is a narrow-band radio technology specially designed for the Internet of Things (IoT). It connects devices more simply and efficiently on already established mobile networks, and handles small amounts of infrequent 2‑way data, securely and reliably. Special focus of this standard is on very low power consumption, excellent penetration coverage and lower component costs, deployed in GSM and LTE regulated frequencies.

Applications of this technology include smart metering, smart cities, building automation and other industry or consumer driven application. Its special characteristics provide ubiquitous network coverage, as this is a key issue in many IoT rollouts (smart meters, for example, have a very strong tendency to turn up in difficult locations, such as in cellars, deep underground or in remote rural areas).

Due to its previous experience with LPWAN streetlight control, Flashnet was one of the companies chosen by Deutsche Telekom in order to facilitate the development of NB-IoT applications. Through their hub:raum business incubator, DT invited Flashnet to develop the first NB-IoT compatible streetlight control solution. The development process began in the mid-2016 and the first functional controllers are expected to be released by the end of the year. The new NB-IoT hardware will be integrated along with PLC and LoRaWAN into inteliLIGHT®, Flashnet’s already proven CMS.

Large telecommunications companies like Vodafone and Huawei have already begun local experiments and testing of the new technology, without any public rollouts yet. It is expected that NB-IoT will be the first IoT communications option for most GSM operators worldwide.
