For Belgium’s roadways and highways, brighter and safer days lie ahead, with potentially up to 120,000 inteliLIGHT controllers set to brighten them. Flashnet, alongside Itron, Lightwell and Fluvius, embark on the journey to modernize around 400,000 street light controllers through a multi–vendor procurement framework. This initiative lights a path not only to energy efficiency, but to a smarter and safer future for Belgium’s urban landscape. 

With a rich history and a strong legacy of innovation, dating back to the invention of the gasoline refining process, Belgium is now keen on ushering in a more sustainable future. The transformation of roadway lighting with inteliLIGHT represents only one aspect of Belgium’s multifaceted approach to create cleaner, more efficient, and intelligent urban spaces. 

For this project, Flashnet collaborated with Itron, a proven global leader in energy, water, smart city, IoT and intelligent infrastructure services.  

The NB-IoT and LTE-catM1 communication technologies are the stars of this implementation, delivering autonomous lighting control for a highly optimized set of use cases. These technologies aren’t just brightening Belgium’s roadways; they’re turning them into intelligent, responsive networks, making the journey safer and more efficient through remote operations and real-time monitoring. 

Zhaga NB-IoT compatible luminaire controllers represent the hardware solution for this project. They can be effortlessly and securely mounted on any compatible lamp, ensuring a swift and cost-effective deployment process. 

The controllers are managed by Itron’s smart city platform, via an industry-standard TALQ Smart City Protocol integration, which further proves Flashnet and Itron’s dedication to interoperability and third-party integrations. Real-time, map-based interaction is essential for easy visualization of devices, groups, and their statuses. With the security and scalability measures achieved through this partnership, Belgium’s lighting infrastructure can be efficiently managed from distance.
