Riyadh, the Saudi Arabia’s capital, is an important financial hub and a main commercial and touristic center in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a vibrant city that remains anchored to the nation’s heritage while embracing forward-looking smart city initiatives. For the last couple of years, the Saudi interest in developing modern technologies has been supported by Flashnet which succeeded to implement smart street lighting projects in cities like Arar, Unaizah, Kharj, Qatif, Dalam and of course, Riyadh.
inteliLIGHT has been committed to light up the streets of Saudi Arabia starting from 2011, with what was at that time one of the largest smart street lighting control implementations in the world – 25.000 smart lamps in Mecca.
The demand of smart lighting across both the residential and commercial sectors is sustained by factors like increasing population and growing urbanization and industrialization, all playing a paramount role in driving the Saudi Arabia smart lighting market. In order to balance the rising energy demands, to reduce operational costs while adding value to citizens, a smart lighting system was considered to be the most efficient and suitable strategy for an innovative city like Riyadh.
More than 150 000 streets lights are already controlled in Saudi Arabia by the inteliLIGHT smart street lighting. Therefore, in a bid to expand the application of smart street lighting systems gradually and support the country’s digital transformation ambitions, another 500 lighting panel control and monitoring units (approximately 50 000 streetlamps) were recently installed in the capital.
Positioned inside the feeder pillar, the devices provide autonomous operation based on predefined astronomic calendar and/or external light level sensor (digital INPUT), with remote real-time ON/OFF control and multiple configuration options. The capabilities provided by inteliLIGHT smart street lighting solution reduces energy costs and makes maintenance simple and cost-effective, while keeping a citizen-centric approach.
The project uses cellular technologies like GSM/NB-IoT/LTE-M communications for carrier-grade security and reliability. The system comes with an excellent penetration and faster communication regardless of the urban density , the right choice for a dense urban area like Riyadh city. This project’s deployment was coordinated by Saudi Delta specialists and implemented locally by Advanced Engineering Solutions Co. with FLASHNET’s remote support available during the implementation.
The system can use one or more IoT communication technologies into the same implementation, with extended flexibility features in terms of geographic deployment and third-party integrations. Therefore, the inteliLIGHT smart street lighting solution could become a facilitator in transforming Riyadh into a smart city, a truly intelligent city where sensing, communication and control will improve the quality of life and will make the city more economically competitive and attractive to businesses and investment.
