The Greek island of Milos welcomes its visitors with inteliLIGHT® LoRaWAN™ controlled street lighting.

Cutting back costs, improving port security and boosting tourist experience were the main reasons that determined Milos to install inteliLIGHT’s lighting control solution for its port outdoor lighting, together with new and modern LED lighting fixtures.

Brasov, ROMANIA, May 16, 2017

Milos is a volcanic Greek island in the Aegean Sea that enjoys increasing touristic interest, especially for young couples seeking warm, peaceful and quiet moments. As any touristic attraction, Milos wishes to offer a pleasant experience and values the safety of its visitors, especially in the sensitive area of the port.

Similar to most Greek islands, the port is more than a sea boarding place. Many of the tourists arrive by sea, either by travelling with cruise ships or sailing private yachts. Many of them choose to spend their time in the port, enjoying the traditional Greek tavernas or just a tranquil walk by the seaside. The port needs to be both functional and social, accommodating tourists and locals alike, creating a safe and inviting environment for everyone.

LedCore, a Greek distribution company specialized in modern LED street lighting technologies and an integrator of lighting control solutions, together with Evolutions Project, were the partners for the entire lighting upgrade project. LedCore is the exclusive distributor of LED-POL lamps, the manufacturer of the LED lamps used in the project and the leading Polish producer of state-of-the-art LED lighting fixtures and accessories, while the control system was provided by inteliLIGHT®, Flashnet’s street lighting control solution.

inteliLIGHT® is a smart streetlight control system that transforms any lighting installation into a modern and proactive infrastructure. The port management gains awareness and control over the street lighting grid, together with improved scheduling and maintenance applications. The LoRaWAN™ controllers were preferred because this modern, long range, low bitrate radio communication allows incredibly fast deployments over private RF networks, with lower implementation costs. Practically, the entire system (including the LoRaWAN™ base station and communication infrastructure) was deployed in a matter of days.

Starting with April 2017, the illuminated port can be viewed on the Milos Island webcams at night, while the authorities received the new control solution with enthusiasm and were really impressed by the possibility to manage and overview the status of the lamps from a software application.
