Hafnarfjörður’s public lighting shines smarter with inteliLIGHT®
In an exciting new development, Flashnet, in partnership with Rafal, is set to modernize the lighting infrastructure of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. The project, involving 6,000 streetlights, aims to improve energy efficiency, optimize street lighting management and pave the way for smarter urban infrastructure while offering unprecedented flexibility and environmental benefits.
Located on the southwest coast of Iceland, Hafnarfjörður is a town known for its beautiful lava fields, strong Viking heritage and forward-thinking infrastructure initiatives. With a growing population and an increasing focus on sustainability, the town is now taking a significant leap towards smart city infrastructure.
The project involves equipping all lighting panels in the city with a mix of segment controllers, including FRCM-L for monitoring and control, and Zhaga controllers with photocells for measuring and adapting to light levels. These devices communicate via LoRaWAN® technology and are managed through the inteliLIGHT CMS software platform.
The FRCM controllers are designed to automate streetlight operation based on sunrise and sunset times, while monitoring voltage, current, and other electrical parameters on all phases. This reduces the need for manual interventions, enables predictive maintenance, and ensures that malfunctions are quickly identified and resolved. This proactive approach helps Hafnarfjörður avoid outages and keeps public spaces well-lit and safe.
Meanwhile, the external Zhaga controllers play a critical role by enabling area-based lighting control that adapts to ambient light conditions. This ensures energy is used efficiently, with lighting tailored to the specific needs of each neighborhood, enhancing both energy savings and public safety. The city will reduce its energy expenditure while minimizing its carbon footprint, a key goal in Iceland’s national sustainability efforts.
LoRaWAN® technology serves as the backbone of the system, providing cost-effective, long-range, low-power connectivity that facilitates real-time communication across large areas with minimal infrastructure. This capability allows Hafnarfjörður to effectively monitor and adjust lighting across different neighborhoods while leaving the door open for utilizing this infrastructure to address other city needs in the future.
The inteliLIGHT CMS platform, renowned for its flexibility and scalability, integrates all these components seamlessly and enables the authorities in Hafnarfjörður to remotely manage the lighting infrastructure, adjusting brightness and energy consumption based on real-time conditions. Through its advanced automation features, including rule management, and its compatibility with the TALQ standard for interoperability with other smart city systems, the platform provides the tools needed to address the evolving challenges of street lighting for years to come.
Hafnarfjörður’s new smart street lighting system lays as proof of the city’s forward-thinking approach to urban development and sustainability. This collaboration between Flashnet and Rafal will not only enhance public safety but also set a new standard for energy-efficient urban lighting in Iceland. As cities around the world look for ways to integrate smart technologies into their infrastructure, Hafnarfjörður shows the value of modern, adaptive solutions, built to meet both local and global needs.
