Dynamic, cosmopolitan and worldly, Santiago (also known as Santiago de Chile) is a city of syncopated cultural currents. With 40% of Chileans calling it home, the city shines through its diversity and its many contrasting neighbourhoods.

The capital and largest city of Chile, as well as one of the largest cities in the Americas, Santiago’s Metropolitan Region has a total population of 7 million, of which more than 6 million live in the city’s continuous urban area. In such a densely populated region, it is vital for the municipality to ensure the safety of its inhabitants.

The project for Chile represents a 15 year commitment from ENGIE to modernise and manage the public lighting infrastructure, using smart street lighting technology to create a safer space for citizens. This initiative not only benefits the community, but it is also a great resource saver for the municipality, reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs all at once.

With an uneven and dense urban landscape, finding a suitable and functional street lighting solution can be challenging. Santiago’s municipality needed a system that could accommodate their infrastructural and technical needs. After thorough research, the city chose Flashnet’s inteliLIGHT smart street lighting management solution for both individual lamp and cabinet control.

For this project, different communication technologies (LoRaWAN and cellular) were tested to find the best match for the city of Santiago. A leader in intelligent energy management, Flashnet was able to provide a lighting control system that allows communication technologies to be used separately or combined. The entire lighting network thus efficiently connects and communicates with the street lighting management software, even considering the complex geographical layout of Santiago.

This project represents an important step in the country’s development. The inteliLIGHT NEMA controllers and the FRCM cabinet controllers are planned to be deployed throughout the city over the next year, helping transform Santiago into the most innovative and modern urban area in South America.
