FLASHNET, a European provider of solutions for smart utility management, has successfully integrated Semtech’s LoRa™ technology into its leading streetlight management solution and smart city platform, inteliLIGHT®.
The communication between the lamp controllers and the monitoring units, previously performed through PLC (power line communication) or mesh RF, will be made via the latest long range, low power RF technology developed and patented by Semtech under the LoRa™ trademark.
With inteliLIGHT®, FLASHNET has improved the streetlight management for millions of people living in tens of cities around the world. But the PLC technology was limited to structured power supply grids and the classic mesh RF communication alternative was restricted by its low range, significantly increasing the implementation costs.
LoRa™ base stations are capable to manage up to 20,000 controllers in a range of up to 15 km, depending on the urban density.
Its spread spectrum of radio frequencies, high interference immunity and low power consumption will make LoRa™ technology ideal for establishing bi-directional communication with any smart city devices besides the lamp controllers (like environmental sensors and utility meters), thus providing cost effective connectivity for other, countless, smart city applications.
By using LoRa™ advanced RF communications, inteliLIGHT® can now be installed and configured regardless of the lighting grid energy supply structure, fully adapting to the any city’s infrastructure, minimizing implementation investments and increasing its smart city capabilities.
