InteliLIGHT will join forces with Richardson Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, as a reliable and reputed supplier of electrical products and services, with the goal of integrating a Smart Lighting Project in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Cities around the world are seeking to accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies and Colombo seems to be one of them. The starting point of this proof-of-concept (POC) smart lighting project will be the collaboration between Flashnet and Richardson, leveraging Flashnet’s capabilities of integrating the latest IT, energy and telecommunications technology into hardware and software solutions.

The colloboration between InteliLIGHT and Richardson intends to install a pilot smart street lighting system in the heart of the capital city – Colombo, based on NB-IoT technology that allows superior connectivity and very low power consumption. The aim of this pilot project will be to demonstrate the feasibility of the InteliLIGHT solution with 150+ controllers and explore the applicability of the system for the proposed project in the future. As a matter of fact, this collaboration came at the right time, being in line with the higher ambitions of the capital to become a modern and smart green city.

As far as the streetlight connectors are concerned, it will be considered to use the inteliLIGHT NEMA sockets – these are standardised connectors which ensure a smooth lamp upgrade and a fast controller installation through plug-and-play, which will allow for an immediate feedback and control. The use of NEMA connectors will save on installation and setup costs and will enable a more facile way to scale up smart street lighting operations in Sri Lanka. Thus, the inteliLIGHT NEMA NB-IoT solution will offer higher operational convenience which will support the area in shifting to a more efficient long-lasting smart street lighting system that enables better control and maintenance.

The smart lighting control system allows the individual management of streetlight lamps and an autonomous operation based on predefined schedules and light level sensors. More than that, the inteliLIGHT software makes possible the integration with other compatible sensors and IoT applications, which will only amplify the opportunities for future solutions like smart parking, EV chargers or smart environmental sensors.

However, looking from another perspective, the inteliLIGHT solution will play a significantrole in addressing environmental concerns, not only by saving energy. Additionaly, inteliLIGHT allows remote ON/OFF and dimming control for each lamp, reducing light pollution.

Both the Flashnet and Richardson teams consider the possibility that this pilot project could lead to the implementation of this smart initiative into the Colombo metropolis at large and that this first step that will break new ground to set up intelligent street lighting systems around the country, which will further develop the IoT ecosystem in Sri Lanka.
