Athens powers ahead with LoRaWAN inteliLIGHT® smart street lighting controllers

Flashnet rolled out a new smart street lighting project in Athens, Greece. The installation of 4,000 smart street lighting controllers in a suburban area uses the LoRaWAN communication technology, selected as the best choice for the case at hand.
The solution also integrates smart waste management, which starts a broader push towards integrated smart city solutions in the Greek capital.
As Athens moves toward modernizing its urban infrastructure, the city is adopting smart technology that enhances sustainability and efficiency on the long run. While the heart of the city remains rooted in its rich cultural heritage, this project, focused on one of its suburbs, highlights the city’s forward-looking vision. The initiative sets the stage for broader implementation of smart technologies that are transforming urban management across Greece.
The smart street lighting project involves the deployment of 4,000 NEMA and pole mounted luminaire controllers, designed to ensure reliable street lighting control. At the core of the system is the LoRaWAN communication technology, known for its ability to provide long-range connectivity with low power consumption. This technology ensures that every streetlight communicates efficiently with the central management system, allowing real-time monitoring and adjustment, reducing energy consumption and improving operational efficiency.
By integrating inteliLIGHT® controllers and other urban infrastructure into the city’s existing software through the Flashnet IoT platform and its TALQ-certified interoperability, authorities gain real-time visibility across services such as street lighting and waste collection. This unified approach allows for centralized management of energy and resources, helping reduce operational costs, improve energy efficiency and support cleaner, more sustainable urban environments. With the help of a stable and scalable communication network, such as Actility’s, the system provides a solid foundation for the city’s long-term smart city vision.
With this project, Athens is taking significant steps toward becoming a smarter, more modern and more integrated city.
