More implementation options for inteliLIGHT®’s LoRaWAN™ compatible streetlight control solution

inteliLIGHT® Sigfox compatible streetlight management solution, available from Q2 2017

inteliLIGHT® LoRaWAN™ compatible controllers are now available in three different form factors: as a wired upgrade for existing lighting installations, as a 7-pin NEMA connectable device or in compact form, to be embedded into luminaries right from the production line

Brasov, ROMANIA – 21 March 2017

LoRaWAN™ compatible street lighting control increases its penetration opportunities with Flashnet’s new product development. Until 2016, the inteliLIGHT® LoRaWAN™ compatible controllers were available for implementation only by direct wire upgrade. Although very efficient when smarting-up existing street lighting installations, these add-on controllers have limitations in terms of design and implementation speed. After consulting with hundreds of street lighting specialists, integrators and operators, Flashnet® has started the development of two more form factors: embedded and NEMA socket controllers.

What are embedded LoRaWAN™ compatible controllers?

inteliLIGHT® LoRaWAN™ compatible embedded controllers are compact devices, ready to be introduced into new street lighting fixtures right from the production line. Smaller than most electronic ballasts, these controllers should fit into most lamps, without the need for redesign. For the lamp producers, the advantage is that they can offer LoRaWAN™-ready lamps right from the production line, improving their offer value and significantly shortening deployment times. In the meantime, the lamps design is kept intact, as an added controller could negatively impact the exterior design of any lamp.

Why is NEMA socket adaptation an important improvement?

By using a NEMA socket compatible streetlight controller, the installation of a smart street lighting system practically becomes a plug-and-play process. The controller can be connected within seconds, powering up is automatic and the luminaire is available immediately for feedback and control. Furthermore, NEMA compatibility offers added flexibility for the municipality, especially by avoiding being supplier-locked when choosing a certain lighting control system.

“The inteliLIGHT LoRaWAN™ compatible NEMA socket controller prototype is already functional and we estimate official product release by the second quarter of 2017. It will represent a new step for inteliLIGHT® and the LoRaWAN™ technology, as it facilitates the penetration of our solution in the North and South American markets.” said Lorand Mozes, CEO of Flashnet®.

NEMA connectors are power plugs and receptacles used for AC mains electricity in the USA and Canada, but also extended to other countries that use the standards set by the US National Electrical Manufacturers Association. Although a specific US standard, the NEMA socket standard has been increasingly used worldwide in the last years in order to ensure interoperability of different streetlight controller technologies with a compatible luminaire build. The inteliLIGHT® FRE-220-NEMA controller is compatible with 7-pin NEMA socket (ANSI C136.41), offering full lamp management and feedback functionality.

About LoRaWAN and Lora Alliance

The technology utilized in a LoRaWAN™ network is designed to connect low-cost, battery-operated sensors and actuators over long distances, in conditions that were previously too challenging or cost prohibitive to connect. With its unique penetration capability, a LoRaWAN gateway deployed on a building or tower can connect to sensors more than 10 miles away or to water meters deployed underground or in basements. LoRaWAN™ offers unique benefits in terms of bi-directionality, security, mobility and accurate localization. Furthermore, very fast and low-cost deployment and operation encourage IoT initiatives globally. (https://www.lora-alliance.org/)
